For those unfamiliar with the ‘project’, as its protagonists called it, 40 Days of Dating is a blog created by two young Manhattan-based designers, Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman, on which they publish an account of a compelling experiment. Jessica and Timothy have been friends for years but never romantically involved, and decided to try dating each other for 40 days, with each of them writing up their experiences daily on the site. If all of this sounds like the plot of Hollywood’s latest romantic comedy, you’re not far wrong. Reports suggest film rights to the project are likely to be sold. There’ll be more than a few young starlets jostling for position in order to win the lead parts: my money is on Zooey Deschanel and Robert Pattinson. Maybe it wasn’t the right time for me to engage with 40 Days. And so, when I saw the hype surrounding the new book, I decided to give the project.
In July , two young New York designers published their romantic experiment online. As designers, they documented the entire process. How does play inform what you do professionally? The heart of much of what we do as creatives is discovery through experimentation. Often the best ideas come out of spontaneous play. I think play is a mindset, where I allow myself the space and time to experiment and take risks without being afraid of failure.
Was that what 40 Days of Dating was about? It is not unusual for creative people to bring their lives into their work.

Did anything interesting happen? Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go for it. No matter what the outcome, it will certainly be an interesting experience. Hopefully we can have some fun along the way, too. Did you learn anything new about Timothy? He told me that when his mother got pregnant, his father made her choose between keeping the child or staying with him.
It seems to me his dating style could result from this. He breaks off relationships before they get too serious to avoid the risk of abandonment. We all have our issues and cope with life differently. Did you learn anything new about yourself? I heart my dad! My parents married at a young age, and have a successful marriage.
